Why I founded tca
The current political climate feels like a hurricane, to say the least. As an avid reader of history, I know the most important lesson is not to learn the facts of what has happened in the past but to understand how history can and will repeat itself. We are responsible for learning from the mistakes of the past, but more importantly, we need to learn how to discern the small set of actions that led to a specific set of circumstances.Previously, when authoritarian governments have risen, they were characterized by finding a common enemy for the people. Authoritarian governments have used a vehicle of division in historical events like the South African Apartheid and Nazi Germany for race.Control by division of religion goes back as far as the 15th century with the Spanish Inquisition that lasted for almost 400 years and got all the way to the Americas, where people were tortured for their beliefs. Recently, Myanmar and the Rohingya Muslims, who were exterminated and accused of being foreign invaders.National origin was also used as a method of division in Rwanda and Yugoslavia to divide common folk who were no more than farmers and normal citizens of otherwise peaceful communities, but who were influenced to ethnically cleanse the population. Not only that, but political ideology has also been used to divide and exterminate people, such as it was used in Stalin's Soviet Union and in Pol Pot's Cambodia. All these regimes have a specific pattern: Identify. Isolate. Dehumanize. Blame.Do you notice some parallels with today's political climate? Specifically identifying immigrants? Muslims? LGBTQ people? It seems that some actors are keen on identifying some groups and labeling them, accusing them without proof. Are they taking your social security, your jobs, driving your rent up? Evidence suggests that none of this is true and is quite the contrary, as immigrants for their part contribute $800 billion in taxes each year.Dehumanizing by calling people "animals," criminals, and referenced as "vermin" or as an "infestation" when the migrant caravans came from South America. Labeling all Muslims as terrorists, these are all tactics to dehumanize.Of course, they are being blamed for the low wages in the country, for the low availability of jobs, for the uncontrollable rise in rents, home prices, and cost of living in general. Are you noticing any trends here? It is very clear to me what is happening. Luckily, the heroes of our past, who were brilliantly versed in the knowledge of history, the classics, and modern philosophy knew that the only way to avoid this is to replace our Kings with a Constitution. The only King in a Democracy is the Constitution, a document that cannot be corrupted by power because it simply delineates the rights with which a person is born, and this is an inalienable right. In my mind, the rights established in our Constitution are being threatened, the same rights guaranteed so that no King is able to establish a rule of law, or rather, a monarchy. It should be understood, through history as well, that rights, while established in the Constitutions of the world, need to be fought for every day. This does not mean to fight in the literal sense. As the Romans knew from the very founding of their Republic, the best citizens are the ones who know their law. This is why the Twelve Tables were publicly displayed everywhere in Rome, so that the citizens would know their laws. This was a requirement for a free Republic to even exist. So, we have our version of the Twelve Tables: the Constitution of the United States. And while it can be a slightly more complicated document than the tablets, there is no reason why any citizen does not know precisely what rights are contained in the document. What is due process? What is freedom of speech, press, and association? What is the right to remain silent? What is the right to an attorney? What is the right to vote? How do we enforce these rights? How do we protect these rights? These are the questions the Texas Constitutional Alliance will answer for all those who want to listen and uphold the Constitution.Because there are no Kings in this land. Only the Constitution. And no person or law is above it.

A little history
"The very idea of a written limiting charter traces to Magna Carta (1215), where English barons forced King John to concede that the crown itself must answer to “lex terrae” the law of the land. This principle is in our DNA. It is the foundation of English Common Law and the guiding star for the American Founders. The idea that no person, not even a king or a government, is above the law is the cornerstone of a free republic. Our Constitution is the ultimate expression of this ancient promise.

Luis De Pablo
A FOUNDER FORGED BY THE FIGHT
Luis De Pablo is an attorney dually-licensed in Texas and Mexico. His career has been dedicated to defending the rights of individuals against powerful systems. From on-the-ground work with migrant families to fighting for workers' rights, Luis saw that the law was too often a maze used to trap people. After building his own tools to conquer the Texas Bar Exam, he founded the Texas Constitutional Alliance to take the law out of the fine print and put it back into the hands of the people.
